Using Wikis in Education Essay -- Education

The diffusion of online tools in education is increasing exponentially. Sener (2010) cites an cast up of online class enrollees from 1.6 million in 2002 to 5.6 million in 2009. In order to meet the needs of a changing bookman population, educators must be aware of the myriad of tools available to enhance learning. This paper presents the use of wikis in education and evaluates the wikis effectiveness according to Chickering and Gamsons Seven Principles of Good example (as cited in Hoskins, 2010). Introduction to WikisThe wiki is a browser based editing program which allows multiple users to contribute and edit text. It includes editing tools similar to a word central processor that allow the user to control text size and color, make the text bold or italicized, and enter web links and pictures. Changes are tracked by the software and successive edits can be monitored or even rolled back to a previous version. The program allows email notification of changes made as chosen by the user in the settings of their account (Cunningham, 2002 Crocker, Hutchings, Nussey, Park, & Springate, 2010).In education, wikis are useful in that they allow open editing of a document. If one student sees an error, they can simply change the text. Crocker et al. (2010) mention limited knowledge of wikis by graduate students, but point out that interaction on the wiki creates dialogue in the midst of students which enhances their learning. They show resemblance by portraying racism, irresponsibility, and corruption. Like the young adults of today many display integrity and are innocent. She never took it for walks, didnt feed it continuously, and later we find his dog leash just lying around.           Tom was irresponsible and prejudice towards other races which were diametrical form his in many instances. His irresponsibility was displayed when he was having a n affair with Myrtle and not staying together with Daisy. Toms prejudice on other races was revealed when he said, nowadays people begin by sneering at family life and family institutions and next theyll throw everything overboard and have intermarriage between black and white,(137). In society today many races are discriminated against because they are thought to be inferior. In school, at work, and in anyones neighborhood there is discrimination because of the skin color and they are harassed. in that location was violence in the 20s with gangs and mob leaders such as Al Capone. He was a notorious racketeer who fought with other gangs. Today there are also gang crimes like in the music business there were killings of two rap artists. An Analysis of The House on Mango Street   In the novel, The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros describes the problems that Latino women face in a society that treats them as second class citizens. A society that is dominated by men, and a society that values women for what they look like, and not for what is on inside. In her Novel Cisneros wants us to envision the obstacles that Latino women must face everyday in order to be treated equally.       In the Book women are looked upon as objects by men whether they are boyfri abolishs, friends fathers or husbands. The girls in the novel grow up with the mentality that looks and appearance are the most important things to a woman. Cisneros in addition shows how Latino women are expected to be loyal to their husbands, and that a husband should have complete control of the relationship. Yet on the other hand, Cisneros describes the character Esperanza as being different. Even though she is born and raised in the same culture as the women around her, she is not happy with it, and knows that someday she will return free from its ties, because she is mentally strong and has a talent for telling stories. She comes back through her stories by showing the women that they can be independent and live their witness lives. In a way this is Cinceros way of coming back and giving back to the women in her community.       The Latino women and girls in the novel are extremely implicated about their appearances, because they feel that if they arent attractive then they wont be detect by men, and they are raised to believe that they pauperism a man to fulfil their life, and that they need a husband to support them, and if they dont look attractive then they are not going to be noticed, and if they are not noticed, then they think they wont end up getting married. When Marin talks about a real job Marin says that the best place to litigate is downtown, n ot because of the work that is there, but because you always get to look beautiful and were nice clothes. She also tells the girls that the only thing that matters is if your skirts are short, and your eyes are pretty, so that you are noticed by guys.
